Alternative anchor · ASTRA Museum

This is a genuine day-of choice, not a fallback. ASTRA was the original plan for this afternoon and remains a strong option — decide when you see how the mountain drive went and how the group is holding up.

Pick ASTRA if: the group wants forest air and open space after hours in the van, the weather is good, or someone is specifically keen on village architecture and craft.

Pick the old town if: you arrive tired or behind schedule, the weather is poor, or people want a proper sit-down lunch and a shorter walk.

• Why the old town became the baseline — Days 6–8 (Șurdești, the Maramureș village day, and the Merry Cemetery) already deliver living village architecture, which is ASTRA’s subject in reconstructed form. Sibiu’s Saxon core and its cathedral are not repeated anywhere else on this route.
• Walking load — ASTRA is a forest park with 10+ km of trails and is easy to overshoot; the old town core is about 600 m across and self-limiting. On a day already marked Hard, that difference matters.
• Degrades better — 45 minutes in the old town is still worth having. Under two hours at ASTRA is not worth the ticket. On a day whose timing depends on a seasonal mountain road, that asymmetry is the strongest argument for the old town.
• Same drive either way — ASTRA sits ~4 km southwest of the centre on the Rășinari road, both are off the same DN1 approach, and both leave you a short drive back to the Sibiu lodging.

• Parking — dedicated lot at the museum, then a ~10 minute drive back to the Sibiu lodging.

If you switch to ASTRA, keep the same 12:45 PM arrival, then drive back to the Sibiu lodging afterwards — about 10 minutes. Since you now sleep in Sibiu there is no departure deadline either way, so ASTRA can run to its 3:30 PM close without pressure. Everything downstream of this day is unaffected.

The baseline timing on this site assumes the full road is open. Recheck this close to travel. These two variants are about the road; the separate old-town-vs-ASTRA choice is independent of them and can be made on arrival either way.

Background / read during travel

The Transfăgărășan is one of Romania’s most famous mountain roads. Sibiu — Hermannstadt to the Transylvanian Saxons who founded it — has the best-preserved Saxon core in the country, and the road gives atmosphere while the old town gives cultural depth.

The Lutheran Cathedral of St. Mary on Piața Huet is the centrepiece: a Gothic hall church whose 73 m tower dominates every photograph of the city. Inside are a 1445 Crucifixion fresco, the tomb of Mihnea cel Rău (son of Vlad Țepeș), a collection of Anatolian rugs donated by Saxon merchants, and one of the largest organs in southeastern Europe at over 6,000 pipes. The tower climb is roughly 200 stairs.

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral on Str. Mitropoliei is the other option — Byzantine, modelled on Hagia Sophia, built 1902–06, with a gold-heavy interior. Free, and about five minutes on foot from Piața Mare. The two are on the same short loop if you want both.

Family rhythm note

Put the walking energy into the old town, not into every mountain turnout. Bathroom opportunities thin out on the road, so use larger stops strategically — and note that the old-town stop puts you next to cafés and public facilities, which the museum option does not do as well.

Good news for the grandparents: both car parks are already in the upper town, so the walk to Piața Mare is essentially level — about 10 m of rise from Piața Teatrului over 590 m, and almost nothing from Cazarma 90. Cobblestones are the only real consideration, so sensible shoes matter more than stamina here. The steep part of Sibiu is the drop down to the lower town, which this plan never asks you to do.

Low-energy fallback

Baseline timing assumes the full Transfăgărășan Highway is open. If the road is not fully open, weather turns poor, or the family is starting slowly, reroute by the faster valley roads and keep the Sibiu stop as the day’s only true sightseeing.

If you are running badly late, the old town compresses well: park, walk to Piața Mare, see the cathedral, and leave. Forty-five minutes still gives you the thing worth seeing.

Parking in Sibiu · verified

Your lodging solves this. Flowers House has free private parking in its inner courtyard, so the van stays put from 12:45 PM until you leave on Day 3 and the old town is done entirely on foot. Confirm with the host that you can use the courtyard before the 3:00 PM check-in — guests report this being allowed, but you arrive over two hours early.

The two public lots below are the backup if the courtyard is unavailable. Both are barrier-controlled and surface-level with no height restriction — which matters, since the Vito is close to the 1.9 m limit common in underground garages.

• Cazarma 90 — preferred. 205 spaces, 2 lei/hour, charged 24/7, 24 h maximum stay. Sits off Str. Cetății, ~550 m from Piața Mare and effectively level with it · open map/search

Either is roughly a 10 minute walk. Ticket on entry, pay at the machine before returning to the van, scan the same barcode to exit. Machines take coins, notes, cards, contactless, and phone NFC.

Street parking in the historic core is Zone A at 3 lei/hour or 15 lei/day, 08:00–22:00 daily, payable by machine or SMS to 7420 — but the core is largely pedestrianised and the streets are tight for a van. Use the courtyard, or failing that the barrier lots.

Execution guidance

• Confirm the Transfăgărășan is open before leaving Pitești — Romania Tourism travel advisory. It is a seasonal road and closures can be posted at short notice.
• The road is closed to traffic 9:01 PM – 6:59 AM (open 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM). Your 10:00 AM approach and 12:45 PM Sibiu arrival sit well inside that window, but if the day slips badly, 9:00 PM is a hard cutoff — not a guideline.
• Have weather and a fuel plan checked before leaving Pitești; there are long stretches with no services on the climb.
• Keep scenic stops short; this day only works if the mountain road remains disciplined.
• Aug 9 is a Sunday, and the Sunday hours actually favour you. The Lutheran Cathedral interior is open 10:00–17:00 and the tower 11:00–17:00. There is a 10:00 service, so the building is not properly visitable until about 11:30 — your 12:45 PM arrival clears that comfortably. Weekday hours would be worse, and Monday the tower does not open until 12:00.
• The Orthodox Cathedral’s Sunday Liturgy runs until roughly 11:30. Also fine on this timing.
• Decide old town vs ASTRA when you reach the Sibiu approach, not before — the call depends on how the mountain drive actually went.
• Make sure lunch / bathroom timing happens before sightseeing fatigue sets in. The old-town version handles this better because you eat first at 1:00 PM.
• Fallback trigger: if mountain timing slips badly, reduce scenic stops and protect the lodging arrival.
